DR Congo opposition parties discuss joint election candidate, fair vote

In Pretoria this week, representatives from the primary opposition parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) engaged in discussions regarding strategies to ensure the forthcoming general election on December 20 is conducted equitably. Their focus also encompasses deliberations on the potential selection of a unified candidate to challenge the incumbent, President Felix Tshisekedi.

The electoral commission in the DRC has officially approved a sizable pool of 25 candidates to contend against Tshisekedi, who is vying for a second term. With the election campaign scheduled to commence on November 20, the opposition parties are actively exploring the possibility of presenting a joint candidate to optimize their chances.

An opposition candidate highlighted that while the consideration of a joint candidacy is imminent, the primary objective is to establish agreed-upon guidelines for facilitating a peaceful electoral process. The intricacies of a divided opposition field, comprising multiple candidates, could potentially provide Tshisekedi with an advantage in the context of a single-round election, wherein a simple majority suffices for victory.
