Shock as Bishop Fires Female Priest After Her Husband Married Second Wife

In a controversial move that has sparked criticism from gender activists and approval from religious conservatives, Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni of West Ankole Diocese has suspended Nice Nahwera, the Curate at Nyakabirizi CoU. The decision stems from Nahwera's husband entering into a polygamous marriage by taking a second wife.

Bishop Twinomujuni, citing the stance of the Anglican Church of Uganda (CoU), emphasized that polygamy would not be tolerated among ministers and believers, leading to Nahwera's suspension from ministry.

Despite the Bishop's firm stance, he did not consider the circumstances that prompted Nahwera's husband to marry a second wife. The couple, married for a decade, has faced challenges in conceiving a child. Nahwera, in a helpless situation, expressed that her husband sought a second wife in an attempt to fulfill their desire for children.

Nahwera's husband has been married to his second wife for a year, and the new union has resulted in the birth of a child, a development that adds complexity to the situation.

Bishop Twinomujuni, known for enforcing church canon, has been leading the Bweranyangi-headquartered diocese since 2017. This suspension highlights the intersection of religious norms, personal challenges, and the evolving dynamics within the church community.
