Zimbabwe declares state of emergency in Harare over cholera

Zimbabwe has taken the step of declaring a state of emergency in Harare, the capital city, due to the occurrence of a cholera outbreak.

The outbreak has resulted in the loss of numerous lives, with over 7,000 suspected cases reported so far.

The city officials have expressed concern that the spread of the outbreak throughout the city is reminiscent of a previous devastating outbreak in 2008, which claimed the lives of thousands of people.

Mayor Ian Makone has announced the state of emergency in response to the cholera situation.

The authorities are now appealing for assistance in containing the spread of the disease and ensuring the provision of safe water, as they believe the current aid being received is insufficient.

The healthcare authorities have been facing significant challenges in managing the large influx of patients resulting from the outbreak.

This development underscores the urgent need for prompt and effective action to address the cholera crisis in Zimbabwe.
