President Museveni To Address Nation On Current Security Situation

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to deliver a national address on security matters, focusing on the ongoing threats posed by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and the surge in gun violence across the country. The announcement was made via the President's official X (formerly Twitter) account, confirming the live broadcast on all TV and radio stations at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024.

The President's address follows a series of ADF attacks, including the recent assault on villages in Kamwenge District, Western Uganda, where three lives were lost, including a 75-year-old woman and her two grandchildren. Numerous houses were also destroyed in the attack. In a separate incident, the ADF, allied with ISIS, claimed the lives of 10 individuals in Kamwenge District, heightening security concerns during the festive season.

President Museveni attributed the December attack to four individuals believed to be remnants of the Njovu-Kamusu rebel group, who had crossed into Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo via an unmonitored border. The same group was implicated in previous atrocities, including the killing of schoolchildren, tourists, and the destruction of property.

The President's forthcoming address also comes in the aftermath of the heinous attack on Lhubiriha secondary school in Mpondwe, Kasese District, where suspected ADF rebels killed over 42 students and locals on June 16. Another incident in October saw ADF-linked terrorists killing two foreign tourists and a Ugandan tourist guide near Queen Elizabeth National Park, further highlighting the persistent security challenges.

Notably, the presidential address takes place just a week after the attempted assassination of Pastor Aloysius Bugingo, head of House of Prayer Ministries, who was attacked by unknown assailants. The incident resulted in the tragic death of his bodyguard, Corporal Richard Muhumuza, and injuries to the pastor.

The nation awaits the President's insights and strategies in addressing these escalating security concerns.
