The military leadership in Niger conveyed to U.S. Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland that they would kill former President Mohamed Bazoum if neighboring nations tried to use military force to reinstate his presidency.
The warning was shared with Nuland while she was visiting Niger this week.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stated that the United States will make sure that Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and the detained government officials are safe, while also holding the junta accountable for their security.
Blinken also expressed support for the ECOWAS in its efforts to bring back constitutional order in Niger, commending its determination to find peaceful solutions for the ongoing crisis.
African Union Condemns Treatment of Deposed Niger Leader
The African Union has conveyed its "serious worry regarding the alleged unfavorable circumstances" surrounding the confinement of former Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who was removed from power.
The Union has labeled the mistreatment of a deposed president by the coup organizers as "inappropriate."
Moussa Faki Mahamat, the head of the AU Commission, has urged the military leaders of Niger to promptly deescalate tensions with the regional organization ECOWAS.
Additionally, he has demanded the immediate liberation of the ousted president.
