Urgent search and rescue efforts unfold after dual boat accidents on Lake Victoria

Authorities have launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing victims after two boat accidents occurred on Lake Victoria yesterday evening and this morning, leaving casualties and missing individuals in their wake.

The first incident took place during an ill-fated journey of an unidentified woman, a man, and a significant load of foodstuff from Kasi islands to Katosi in Mukono district.

“Due to overloading and bad weather conditions, the boat capsized. Tragically, the woman drowned, while the man was rescued by fishmongers.” Patrick Onyango Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson said.

Shortly after, the second accident occurred as a transport boat was en route from Kiseba islands to Katosi in Mukono. The boat was carrying 11 passengers and cargo, including 100 bags of charcoal, 40 bags of silver fish, and personal belongings. Distressingly, the boat capsized between Jana and Kimmi.

“Fortunately, six individuals were rescued by another transport boat, but five people remain missing,” he said “Police Marines are actively conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters to locate the missing individuals, whether alive or deceased.”  Mr Onyango said.

Preliminary investigations into both accidents have revealed overloading and adverse weather conditions as the primary causes.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety while utilizing water transport. The authorities urge all travelers to wear life jackets and adhere to weight limits to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.

“In light of these incidents, we appeal to all travelers who utilize water transport to prioritize their safety by wearing life jackets and refraining from overloading their vessels.” Onyango said.
