KIKUUBE: Police Officer Detained for shooting three at an introduction ceremony

 

Police in Kikuube District have arrested one of their officers with another on the run on allegations of shooting and injuring three people at an introduction ceremony in Kipongo village, Kinogozu Parish, Buhimba Sub County over the weekend.

The officers identified as PC Harold Mwesigwa (in custody) and PC Denis Arinaitwe are attached to Kinogozu Police Post in Buhimba Sub County, Kikuube district in western Uganda.

According to preliminary reports, the duo had been deployed by their supervisor, AIP Nuiat Nakigozi to provide security at the introduction party at the home of late Tibaryangire Temiseo on Saturday when the 1 pm shooting incident ensued.

The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Julius Allan Hakiza explained that during the event, the officers were reportedly attacked by a group of men armed with pangas forcing the cops to retaliate by first firing warning shots and later firing at them leading to the injury of the three revellers.

“Preliminary findings indicate that during the event, police officers were attacked by a group of men armed with pangas who appeared to be agitated. Despite warning shots fired into the air by the officers, the assailants continued to approach them, resulting in the injury of three individuals,” said Mr Hakiza in a Sunday police statement.

The injured individuals were identified as Violet Katusabe, 22, Joel Mugume, 24, and Julius Tugume, 40, who were all rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Hakiza said the officers’ supervisor, AIP Nakigozi has been charged with neglect of duty as investigations to uncover the motive behind the attack continue.
