3 Dead as Speeding Ambulance Rolls Severally

Three people lost their lives after an ambulance they were traveling in was involved in a road accident at Bubissa Area along the Marsabit-Moyale Highway in Marsabit County on Sunday, July 9, 2023.

The accident involved an ambulance traveling from Marsabit to Isiolo for emergency medical services.

The ambulance was reportedly speeding when it veered off the road and rolled several times before stopping by the roadside.

Confirming the accident, Turbi Sub-county Police Commander Issack Ahmed noted that the driver lost control of the van.

Ahmed also confirmed that the driver was injured in the accident and later rescued by other motorists who were plying the same route.

The deceased were immediately taken to the mortuary where their bodies were placed under preservation while the injured were transported to the hospital for medication.

The Sub-county police commander noted that investigations into the matter were launched.

Ahmed noted that the accident highlighted the need for safety on the road, stating that road accidents are a major cause of death in Kenya, often caused by speeding.

On Thursday, 23 March National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that the number of road fatalities had decreased by 4.6 per cent in a period of one year.

According to the data by NTSA accidents involving pillion passengers and motorcyclists had reduced from 1,021 to 974 between March 20, 2023, and the same date the previous year.

NTSA attributed the decrease in road accidents to a number of factors, including increased enforcement of traffic laws, public education campaigns, and the improvement of road infrastructure.

However, the NTSA warned that road accidents remain a major problem in Kenya, and that more needs to be done to reduce the number of deaths.
