Horrific rainfall in southwest Japan has triggered mudslides that have left two people dead and at least six more reported missing after over 1.7 million people in vulnerable areas were urged to seek shelter.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency heavy rain warning for Fukuoka and Oita prefectures on the southern main island of Kyushu, although the warning was downgraded later Monday.

PM Fumio Kishida said he would consider whether to attend the NATO summit in Vilnius only after assessing the flooding status on Tuesday morning.
