Tragedy as family dog kills Dr Obuku’s son

Dr. Andrew Obuku, former President of the Uganda Medical Association, faced a heart-wrenching loss on Monday when his young son fell victim to a devastating incident involving their family dog. The tragic event unfolded at their residence in Canaan Estate, Mawugulu Cell, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, as detailed in a recent police report.

According to a joint investigation by Kisubi and Entebbe police stations, the family's dog managed to escape from its kennel, launching a violent attack on Dr. Obuku's son, Raphael, who was under the care of a housekeeper at the time.

The housekeeper, identified as Sharon Nuwarinda, had placed young Raphael on the veranda while attending to her duties elsewhere when the dog broke free. In a courageous attempt to shield the child from the aggressive animal, Nuwarinda found herself in the midst of the harrowing attack, sustaining severe injuries along with Raphael.

Despite her valiant efforts to fend off the dog and raise an alarm, the police report tragically reveals that the canine fatally bit Raphael, resulting in the unimaginable loss of his life as it severed his head. In the chaos of the incident, Nuwarinda also suffered a bite to her leg.

Previous instances of the dog's aggressive behavior towards neighbors have been noted, with the situation reportedly exacerbated by the family's practice of keeping the gate locked, which hindered immediate intervention during the attack.

After the fatal incident, the dog shockingly returned to its kennel, leaving behind a scene of devastating tragedy. The police report issued a stern warning to dog owners in the area, urging them to exercise caution and ensure proper control over their pets.

Investigations into the tragic event are ongoing, with authorities scheduled to conduct a postmortem examination at Mulago Hospital to ascertain further details.

This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a reflection on the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences that can arise from unforeseen circumstances.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Andrew Obuku and his family during this incredibly difficult time, hoping for strength and healing in the wake of such a profound loss.
