In a recent incident in Kayunga District, police were compelled to use live ammunition to disperse a crowd that was seeking retribution against a 19-year-old woman accused of abandoning her newborn in a pit latrine in Ntooke village, Kayunga Town council.
According to Mr. Isa Katongole, the head of Kayunga police station, the woman in question, identified as Milly Mutonyi, had concealed her pregnancy from her new partner out of fear that he would reject her. Despite her efforts to hide her condition, Mutonyi gave birth to a baby boy and allegedly disposed of him in the latrine.
The situation escalated as community members, outraged by the incident, threatened to harm Mutonyi. Mr. Fred Ssekatonya, the local council chairman, recounted that the woman's actions were discovered by a friend who then alerted authorities after hearing the baby crying from the latrine.
Mutonyi's new partner, Mr. Alex Ssenyonjo, expressed shock at the news, claiming he was unaware of her pregnancy. He emphasized that Mutonyi had concealed her condition throughout their relationship.
Amid the chaos, the police intervened to protect Mutonyi from the angry mob. She was subsequently arrested and taken into custody, facing charges of attempted murder.
In her defense, Mutonyi tearfully admitted that she had considered harming her baby out of fear that her new relationship would falter if her partner discovered her pregnancy.
Ms. Hellen Alikoba, the officer in charge of the family and child protection unit in Kayunga, urged women facing similar challenges to seek guidance from authorities and counselors.
