Ugandan Health Worker Dies After Hitting Pothole

A 26-year-old volunteer health worker met a tragic end in the early hours of Sunday after his motorcycle collided with a pothole in Rukungiri district, Uganda. The victim, identified as Austin Abaho, worked as a volunteer at Nyakibale Hospital and resided in Kebisoni Village.

According to authorities, Abaho left Nyakibale Hospital around 1:25 am, riding his motorcycle back to his place of residence. The fatal accident occurred at a location known as Katogo, where he reportedly hit a pothole, lost control, collided with a metallic side road guard, and tragically succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Abaho was alone on the motorcycle at the time of the incident.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the details of the accident, stating, "When he reached a place called Katogo, he hit a pothole, lost control and hit a metallic side road guard and fell down. He was alone on the motorcycle and died on the spot."

Law enforcement officials have visited the scene and documented the details of the accident. Abaho's body has been transported to Nyakibale Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination, while the motorcycle involved in the tragedy has been parked at Cps Rukungiri awaiting inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).

"Inquiries into the same (accident) continue," mentioned Maate during a brief statement to journalists.

The untimely death of the dedicated health worker sheds light on the challenges posed by poorly maintained roads in Uganda. This incident follows recent demonstrations by opposition leaders in the country, highlighting the deplorable state of roads. Activists, as a form of protest, symbolically 'fished' and planted bananas on the metro-Kampala roads, expressing their discontent with the government's perceived failure to improve the country's road infrastructure. As investigations into the tragic accident continue, the incident underscores the urgent need for road maintenance to ensure the safety of all road users.
