Machete wielding thug in viral video arrested

Police have identified the assailant who attacked a client at a cash office in Nateete, on the outskirts of Kampala. The suspect, Ashraf Kiiza, is an employee at Bashir Grain Millers.

Kiiza assaulted Sam Turyamuhaki on Monday around 8 p.m. when he entered the cash office wielding a machete and a hammer, leading to a struggle between the two. Although Kiiza was overpowered and fled the scene, he managed to injure Turyamuhaki.

“I was verifying eight million Shillings handed to me by the owner of Bashir Grain Millers when a man unexpectedly entered the office carrying a sack. To my shock, he pulled out a machete and hammer and demanded the money I was counting,” Turyamuhaki told police.

In the video footage, Kiiza is seen placing the sack on the waiting chairs as Turyamuhaki counts the money, seemingly unperturbed. Suddenly, Kiiza retrieves a machete from the sack and demands the money. Turyamuhaki attempts to grab the machete but misses, leading to a violent confrontation.

Kiiza then struck Turyamuhaki on the head, prompting others to intervene and temporarily subdue him before he managed to escape.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire reported that Turyamuhaki sustained severe head injuries and was rushed by local residents to a nearby health facility for immediate medical attention.

“The police were informed about the incident and responded promptly. We recovered exhibits, including the hammer and machete used in the assault. Additionally, CCTV footage from the scene has been secured to aid in the ongoing investigation,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire added that Kiiza has been arrested. The police employed all available means to apprehend him, and he will face charges of attempted murder and aggravated robbery.

The motive behind Kiiza's violent actions remains unclear, especially since he was an employee of the grain company that had just given the money to Turyamuhaki.
