PLE Leaver Who Burnt Self 'For Failing to Score Aggregate 4' Passes On

A recent Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) leaver succumbed to severe burns after setting himself on fire, leaving the community in shock and sorrow. The incident occurred on Friday night, and the young man passed away the following day at around 9 a.m.

Dr. Kalanzi, who examined the victim before his death, revealed that the patient had expressed feelings of not being loved. The individual was admitted to the hospital with severe burns, and his entire body was tragically burnt beyond recognition, with only a small part of his face surviving the ordeal.

"The major issue seems to be an underlying mental health problem, which had been diagnosed and addressed," Dr. Kalanzi explained. He emphasized that the patient had complained about not feeling loved, stating that only his brother cared for him.

Initial reports suggested a connection between the incident and the release of the 2023 PLE results. However, the victim's father, Mr. Musa Waligo, dismissed these claims, asserting that his son's death was not linked to academic performance. He mentioned that, at the time of the incident, he had not yet received information about his son's results.

Mr. Waligo shared that his son had suffered from speech impairment during his childhood, leading to mockery from peers. Despite efforts to seek counseling for the young man, the feelings of isolation persisted.

"He could have been going through trauma. He must have needed a lot of support and counseling but he had nowhere to offload his issues," a family member expressed in a viral audio recording.

On the day of the incident, the young man had reportedly carried out his usual chores and spent time with his siblings before buying petrol, pouring it on himself, and setting himself on fire in an outside bathroom. Neighbors, noticing the smoke, rushed to his aid, but unfortunately, it was too late.

The tragedy underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues and providing adequate support for those struggling with feelings of isolation and despair. Community members and health professionals alike are urged to be vigilant and proactive in identifying and assisting individuals who may be at risk.
