A 30-year-old man, Amos Opio, made a fourth attempt to kill his 70-year-old mother, Florence Asio, by setting their house on fire in Kabuki village, Malongo sub-county, Mayuge district.
Fortunately, residents intervened and saved Asio before the fire could spread. Opio fled, arousing suspicion and prompting residents to notify the police.
Asio explained that Opio was pressuring her to sell their family land, despite her already granting him a portion of it, which he sold and wanted more.
Opio had previously destroyed their coffee and banana plantations, their main source of income for her 13 grandchildren's school fees.
Asio emphasized that the land was essential for their survival, as she had been cultivating it for two decades to support her family's needs. This incident marked the fourth time Opio had posed a threat to his mother's life, according to a local resident, Iduma Baisi.
Busoga East police spokesperson, Diana Nandawula, confirmed that investigations were initiated.
