Kyegegwa, 14th September 2023 - In a historic turn of events, Kyegegwa district has been selected as the host for this year's National celebrations of the International Day of Older Persons, slated for October 1st. This significant occasion seeks to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of elderly individuals to society and to enhance public awareness about their rights and needs.
Under the banner of "Healthy Ageing; A Call to Action," this year's theme resonates with the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing 2020-2023, envisaging a world where everyone can enjoy a long and healthy life.
A pivotal joint planning meeting transpired at the district headquarters on Thursday, 14th September 2023, where Kyegegwa district officials, in collaboration with representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, demonstrated their unwavering readiness to host the prestigious national event.
Kyegegwa Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Flavia Kabahenda Rwabuhoro, who also serves as the chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender and Social Development, expressed her pride in this momentous occasion. She highlighted that this would mark the first time that Kyegegwa district has hosted a national event since its inception in 2010. Hon. Rwabuhoro stated, "We are actively profiling older persons in the district for special recognition on the day," and highlighted the remarkable increase in life expectancy in Uganda, rising from 47 years in 1986 to an impressive 63.4 years at present.
Mr. Byamukama John, the LCV Chairperson, urged residents to seize the opportunity presented by the influx of visitors and participants during the celebrations. He revealed that efforts are underway to mobilize older persons from all corners of the district, with the oldest attendee expected to be an impressive 133 years old.
Mrs. Emily Ajiambo, the Assistant Commissioner for Disability and Elderly Affairs at the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, extended her gratitude to Kyegegwa district for eagerly volunteering to host the International Day of Older Persons celebration. She emphasized that healthy aging entails incorporating the concerns of older individuals into development planning. Mrs. Ajiambo highlighted essential strategies, including prioritizing the needs of older persons at public service centers such as health facilities and promoting dietary awareness among them.
Anticipation is building as the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, is expected to grace the celebrations with her presence.
