East African leaders have unanimously agreed to prolong the presence of their military forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
This decision comes after recent protests in the DRC demanding the removal of both East African troops and the UN peacekeeping mission from the area.
Originally, the regional force's mandate was set to expire on September 8, but now it will be extended for an additional three months, until December 8.
The announcement was made by the East African Community bloc following a summit of regional leaders in Nairobi, Kenya, attended by the DR Congo Prime Minister, Uganda's Minister of East African Community Affairs, and the presidents of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
