820 killed as buildings damaged by Earthquake in Morocco

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit central Morocco, causing extensive damage to buildings and resulting in the tragic loss of at least 820 lives, according to the country's interior ministry. 

The earthquake's epicenter was located in the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 44 miles southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, as reported by the US Geological Survey. 

This devastating event occurred at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock just 19 minutes later. 

The casualties occurred not only in Marrakesh but also in various southern regions, with a significant number of victims believed to be in remote areas.
