Numerous Nigerien citizens, primarily young men, formed long lines outside Niamey's main stadium on August 19th in response to a call for civilian volunteers to support the armed forces.
The junta was not directly involved in this effort, though it was aware of it. One of the organizers, Younoussa Hima, expressed surprise at the massive turnout, mentioning that they hadn't anticipated mobilizing such a large number of people.
The initiative, known as "The Mobilisation of Young People for the Fatherland," also faced the challenge of having to stop a census due to the overwhelming number of individuals interested in non-military volunteer roles.
