Ghana Abolishes Death Penalty

 

Ghana has joined the ranks of African nations that have abolished the death penalty. 

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given his approval to two bills endorsed by Accra’s parliament in July. These bills convert all death sentences into life imprisonment. 

The legislation, championed by Francis-Xavier Sosu from Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, aims to create a more liberated, prosperous, inclusive, and secure society in the nation, which has a population of over 32 million. 

Sosu emphasized that the change will bring an end to the psychological toll on death row inmates who lived each day as if it might be their last, likening their experience to that of the living dead.
