JINJA: Food Poisoning at Burial Leaves 3 dead, 46 hospitalised

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the serene village of Bukasami in Buyengo town council, Jinja District, was engulfed in grief and chaos as a burial ceremony took a tragic turn. Three lives, including those of two children and one adult, were abruptly cut short, and 46 others found themselves battling for survival in hospital beds after consuming poisoned food during the somber occasion.

The fateful gathering, held to bid farewell to Sheik Ahamad Magumba, the respected County Khadi of the area, descended into a nightmare as attendees fell victim to the toxic substances lurking within the meal. Reports from Buwenge General Hospital, where the survivors were rushed, paint a harrowing picture of individuals suffering from severe symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, and stomachaches.

Dr. Aggrey Bameka, the Medical Superintendent at Buwenge General Hospital, confirmed the tragic loss of lives and provided insight into the dire situation. "We got 49 people and there were three deaths, two children, and one adult," he expressed, highlighting the severity of the incident. Dr. Bameka also shed light on the challenges faced by the hospital in treating the influx of patients, citing shortages in medical supplies and the overwhelming demand for care.

The deceased, named as Suleiman Byanguwa, aged 4, Shamim Nangobi, aged 6, and Faisal Magumba, aged 20, leave behind grieving families and a community in shock. Despite the grim circumstances, there is a glimmer of hope as nine patients have been discharged, with others showing signs of improvement under medical care.

As investigations into the tragedy unfold, questions loom over the exact cause of the poisoning. Dr. Bameka revealed that blood samples have been dispatched to the hub system in Kampala to ascertain the underlying factors behind the deaths and illnesses.

The gravity of the situation prompted swift action from local authorities, with Mr. Samuel Akalyamawa, an area councilor, detailing efforts to transport affected individuals to medical facilities. "We ferried 75 people suspected to have eaten poisoned food to Buwenge General Hospital and others to Jinja Referral Hospital," he stated, underlining the scale of the emergency response.

For the residents of Bukasami village, this tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of vigilance in times of communal gatherings. As the community grapples with the aftermath, authorities, including the Kiira Region Police, continue their investigations into the suspected food poisoning, aiming to uncover the truth behind this devastating loss of lives.
