In a tragic turn of events on Monday, 26th February, 2024, a youth protesting the poor state of roads in Kagadi district met with a fatal accident involving an official vehicle linked to the LCV Chairperson.
According to a statement released by SP Hakiza Julius Allan, the PRO Albertine, on 27th February, 2024, the driver of the vehicle at the time, Tibihikira Stephen, has been apprehended.
The incident unfolded around 8:00 am at Iguruka during a demonstration by residents of Muhoro, Bwikara, and surrounding areas, alongside a group of boda boda riders voicing their concerns over the deteriorating road conditions exacerbated by recent rains.
Preliminary reports suggest that the area LCV chairperson and his team were responding to assess the situation in a vehicle registered as UG 6998M, which belongs to the District Health Office.
Hakiza went on to explain that the vehicle, driven by Tibihikira Stephen, a driver under the Kagadi local government, was reportedly traveling at a high speed when it tragically struck and claimed the life of Magezi Tumuhaise, 25, a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Sub County in Kagadi District.
The deceased, as per reports, was among the demonstrators present. Following the incident, the driver fled the scene, but authorities were able to locate and arrest him later on.
Magezi Tumuhaise's body has since been conveyed to the mortuary, marking a sorrowful end to the protest that started with hopes for change.
SP Hakiza, however, urged community members to seek intervention from relevant authorities for amicable solutions to their grievances rather than resorting to unlawful assemblies and illegal demonstrations.
