The Rivers State House of Assembly complex in Nigeria was set on fire over threat to impeach the state governor

The Rivers State House of Assembly complex in Nigeria was subjected to an act of arson in response to the perceived threat of impeaching the state governor. On a fateful Sunday, the chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly was deliberately set ablaze.

This incident occurred in the wake of the House's decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against both the Leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Subsequently, protests erupted in the city of Port Harcourt, with individuals accusing the ruling party of Nigeria of attempting to seize power in states where opposition candidates currently hold governing positions.

Law enforcement authorities responded to the protests by employing tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds. In response, Governor Fubara alleged that the police force was influenced by rival politicians and even accused them of attempting to assassinate him.

Fortunately, the fire at the Assembly complex was successfully extinguished by the fire services. The police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators of the arson, speculating that it may have been carried out by "political thugs."
