Seychelles main opposition party leader charged with witchcraft

The leader of the main opposition party in Seychelles, Patrick Herminie, along with seven other individuals, has been charged with witchcraft by a court in the country.

Herminie, who intends to run for the presidency in the 2025 election representing the United Seychelles Party, has claimed that his arrest and prosecution are politically motivated in an attempt to tarnish his reputation and that of his party.

The charges stem from the discovery of two bodies that had been unearthed from a cemetery on Mahe Island. Local media reports indicate that Herminie and his co-accused are facing multiple charges, including possession of items intended for use in witchcraft and conspiracy to engage in witchcraft.

Police state that they found Herminie in possession of documents believed to have been stolen from vandalized locations, including Catholic churches.
