The United Nations envoy for Libya is advocating for the formation of a "unified government" in preparation for the upcoming elections.

The UN's Libya envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily, emphasized the need for a "unified government" that is agreed upon by key stakeholders, marking a change from his previous stance that advocated for elections first.

The Government of National Unity in Tripoli has not gained acceptance from the eastern-based parliament since early 2021 after a failed attempt at national elections.

Bathily is considering the possibility of arranging a meeting among major stakeholders or their representatives to address significant issues.

In contrast to previous UN efforts that stressed the urgency of holding national elections, the focus now seems to be shifting towards potentially replacing GNU Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah and forming a new interim government to oversee the voting process.
