The Tanzanian administration is justifying the apprehension of two opposition politicians and an attorney, asserting that their detainment is unrelated to their disapproval of the government's arrangement with a United Arab Emirates company to oversee the nation's ports.
The trio taken into custody - former opposition leader and former ambassador to Sweden, Willibrod Slaa, activist Mpaluka Nyagali, and lawyer Boniface Mwabukusi - are prominent voices critical of the port contract.
However, the government claims that their arrest is connected to "specific public threats," which encompassed "advocating for the violent overthrow of the government."
Information Minister Nape Nnauye's statement assures that individuals won't face arrest solely for expressing criticism of the port deal or any other governmental initiatives.
