Six lives were claimed by Maui wildfires, driven by winds from a distant hurricane.

The idyllic Hawaiian island faced an "apocalyptic" scene as flames engulfed Lahaina, a popular resort city.

Thousands were forced to evacuate, with some seeking refuge in the ocean from the smoke and fire.

The devastation left multiple neighborhoods in ruins, cutting off the island's western side and leaving only one highway accessible.

Reports indicated that Lahaina, its harbor, and the surrounding areas suffered widespread damage, with around 271 structures destroyed or harmed, according to information from flyovers conducted by the U.S. Civil Air Patrol and the Maui Fire Department.
