DRC MPs vote to lift military rule in the East

Members of parliament in the Democratic Republic of Congo have voted to end military rule in two eastern provinces after a three-day meeting.

The state of siege, which had been implemented by the government in May 2021 to combat armed groups in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, was criticized by citizens and UN agencies for worsening the situation.

Nearly all participants in the meeting supported handing back civilian authority, with 195 out of 196 members voting in favor of lifting the state of siege. The final decision now rests with President FĂ©lix Tshisekedi.
