AU suspends Niger due to Coup

The African Union has suspended Niger's involvement in its activities due to a military coup that occurred on July 26. The AU is urging the coup leaders to release the elected President Mohamed Bazoum and return to their military bases.

The AU Peace and Security Council has acknowledged ECOWAS' decision to prepare a standby force for a potential military intervention and has tasked the AU Commission with evaluating the potential economic, social, and security consequences of deploying such a force.

The AU is urging its member nations and the global community to avoid actions that would legitimize Niger's coup leaders and is firmly against interference from non-African entities.
