Mozambique's armed forces have announced the death of Bonomade Machude Omar, the alleged leader of an Islamic State-affiliated insurgency in the northern Cabo Delgado province.
Omar, also known as Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, had been orchestrating operations since the insurgency began in Mozambique. He was killed alongside two companions.
President Filipe Nyusi confirmed Omar's death but emphasized that the fight against the insurgency continues. The conflict, ongoing since 2017, has resulted in numerous casualties and has affected major energy projects in the region.
