ADF Bomb Expert Captured

The UPDFannounced on Sunday that it has captured Anywari Al Iraq, a commander of the Islamic State-allied rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), known for his expertise in creating improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This capture occurred in the eastern jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the ADF is based.

The operation also resulted in the rescue of nine people, including children, from Ituri province in eastern Congo. The military recovered various materials used for making IEDs during the operation.

The ADF originated as an uprising in Uganda but relocated to Congo in the late 1990s. The group pledged allegiance to Islamic State in mid-2019 and has been responsible for numerous deadly attacks, including a November 2021 triple suicide bombing in Kampala that killed seven people. In 2021, Uganda launched a joint military operation with Congo to combat the ADF insurgency.
