7 family Members die in Car River Plunge in Budaka


Seven family members died on Sunday morning after their vehicle plunged into the River Namatala in Budaka District. The accident happened at the River Namatala Bridge, which separates Budaka from Butaleja districts, when the driver of the Toyota Ipsum, registered as UAM 969, lost control and veered off the road.

According to a preliminary police report, the victims were returning home to Butaleja District from Mpigi District, where they had attended a wedding ceremony on Saturday. Bukedi North Regional police spokesperson Mr. Samuel Semewo confirmed the incident, stating that the driver lost control at the River Namatala Bridge, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river and drown all passengers.

Mr. Semewo explained that after the wedding party on Saturday, the group left Mpigi at around 9 pm, and the accident occurred around 4:30 am. The deceased were identified as Pastor Kaalo Kefa, 35, Aron Kabingi, 60, Florence Kataike, 50, Sarah Sanyu, 29, Esther Misibuka, 31, and Grace Kisakye, 22. One body, identified only as Michael, 17, is still missing. Mr. Semewo mentioned that the police arrived at the scene to retrieve the vehicle and bodies, noting that the driver survived by jumping through a window.

The bodies have been taken to Budaka Health Centre IV for postmortem examinations, and further investigations are ongoing.
