SOROTI: Two siblings die in house fire

In Soroti, authorities are investigating a tragic incident where two young individuals, Joshua Ewangu, aged 10, and Gabriela Ibiara, aged 5, lost their lives due to suffocation in a house fire. The children, who were under the care of Mr. William Edumu, a teacher at Achongwen Primary School in Kaberamaido District, were locked inside the house by their mother while she tended to her garden.

Upon her return, she discovered smoke emanating from the house and raised an alarm. Despite efforts to rescue them and rush them to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, the children succumbed to their injuries. Their bodies currently await postmortem at Soroti Hospital mortuary.

It's been reported that the mother had a routine of locking the children indoors while she worked in the garden. Unfortunately, neighbors like Mr. Emmanuel Etida mistook the smoke for cooking and didn't intervene immediately.

The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, although a matchbox was found near the doorway. The parents of the deceased, along with neighbors, have provided statements to the police, while clan members are preparing for the burial, scheduled for tomorrow pending the conclusion of police procedures.
