Mbarara Woman arrested for forcing son to clean latrine with his tongue

Mbarara police have apprehended Shantel Mercy, a resident of Nyakeizi cell in Kakoba division, Mbarara city, for the alleged torture of her five-year-old stepson. The child was discovered by authorities in a public latrine with severe burns on his back and visible marks from physical abuse.

According to police reports, Shantel Mercy, the stepmother, is accused of not only inflicting burns on the child's back but also subjecting him to inhumane treatment, including making him sleep in the latrine and subjecting him to severe beatings.

Neighbours, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that the accused woman went to the extreme of instructing the young boy to clean their latrine using his tongue.

Ahmed Timanywa, the LC1 chairman of Nyakeizi cell, stated, "I was notified at about 9 am that a woman is keeping her stepson under the bed with a burnt back and also keeps him in the latrine. I was also informed she has been asking the boy to clean it with his own tongue, so I notified the police who swung into action."

Lubowa Sayid, an area counselor, revealed the harrowing conditions the child endured, saying, "the little boy has been feeding from the latrine on lucky days and going on an empty stomach some days, only moving out when the latrine is being used."

Shantel Mercy was taken into custody while she had her other two children at a salon for a haircut in preparation for the upcoming school resumption on Monday. The police have initiated investigations into the matter, and preliminary findings indicate that the five-year-old's father neglected him, leaving him in the care of Shantel without adequate support. The child is now receiving medical attention, and the police are committed to bringing justice to the young victim.
