Brig. Gen. Chris Kasaija, leading the Air Force wing in Entebbe, paid a poignant tribute to the late Lt. Allan Tukamuhabwa Kapando, a pilot who met a tragic end in a helicopter crash on January 2. Kasaija extolled Lt. Tukamuhabwa as an extraordinary aviator, whose indelible legacy is forever linked to his significant role in combating Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Highlighting Lt. Tukamuhabwa's commendable efforts in addressing insecurity posed by the ADF, not only in Western Uganda but also extending into the DRC, Kasaija emphasized the pilot's unwavering dedication to duty. Lt. Tukamuhabwa's ultimate sacrifice in service will be eternally remembered, and the UPDF – Air Force stands in solidarity with the grieving family during these challenging times, stated Brig. Gen. Kasaija during the solemn burial ceremony at Lt. Tukamuhabwa's ancestral home in Seeta village, Kinuuka sub-county, Lyantonde district.
Mourners were informed of Lt. Tukamuhabwa's successful completion of his basic flying course and his expertise in operating advanced combat helicopters, particularly within the Cobra Squadron. Brig. Gen. Kasaija underscored the late pilot's exceptional professionalism, highlighting his conscientious approach to duties and his unwavering commitment to achieving positive outcomes in every mission.
James Kakooza, the representative of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), conveyed heartfelt condolences to Lt. Tukamuhabwa's family, expressing particular sympathy to James Rugazu, the late pilot's father. Kakooza pledged support for the education of one of Lt. Tukamuhabwa's children, emphasizing the community's commitment to stand by the grieving family.
Recognizing the ongoing mission of the UPDF, Kakooza emphasized Uganda's dedication to the principles of Pan-Africanism. He pledged to eradicate insecurity, fostering security and prosperity in the East African region. Kakooza commended the UPDF for its comprehensive training programs, acknowledging its emergence as a formidable force within Africa.
The tragic incident unfolded on January 2 when a UPDF combat helicopter, carrying both Lt. Allan Tukamuhabwa and Lt. Swadiq Aroma, crashed in Karugutu, Ntoroko district.
