Tragic Boat Accident Claims Five Lives on Lake Victoria


On Monday, January 1, 2024, five people lost their lives when a boat traveling from Zigunga to Zinga Island in Buvuma District capsized on Lake Victoria. The tragedy unfolded around 7:00 pm, according to Hellen Butoto, the Sezibwa Region Police spokesperson.
Reports suggest that the ill-fated boat, which was allegedly overloaded, broke into two as it attempted to dock at Zinga Island. Eyewitnesses at the scene have indicated that the boat was carrying an undisclosed number of passengers, and efforts are underway to establish the exact count of individuals on board.
Despite the distressing situation, 14 people managed to successfully rescue themselves. The survivors, aided by their colleagues with swimming abilities, were promptly transported to Bugaya Hospital for medical attention.
The deceased have been identified as Monday Bukenya (50), Nantaba Sisa (7), Lydia Nanjita (16), Night Ssabano (9), and Angel Namuwaya (10). Their untimely demise has left families and the community in mourning.
The survivors include Annet Bandibasa (35), Florence Nakintu (45), Samali Nalubega (3), Olivia Nalunga (6), Joseph Bukenya (50), Joseph Omoding (15), Shinsia Kaguna (9), David Mukasa (54), Kutusa Namatovu (40), Juma Kangungulu (13), Shaluwa Nishima (9), Precious Naziwa (6), Yisa Yoweri (2), and six-month-old Dan Sseluyembe.
Hellen Butoto expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident and assured the public that the Marine Police are diligently working to recover any additional bodies that may still be missing. The police spokesperson also confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are underway, with updates promised as soon as they become available.
