In a solemn atmosphere, the halls of the House were engulfed in grief early Monday as legislators, led by Speaker Anita Among, received the remains of the late Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal, former Woman Member of Parliament (MP) for Dokolo District. The emotional scene unfolded as a team from A-Plus Funeral Management wheeled the casket containing Ogwal's body into the South Wing Central lobby at 9 am, accompanied by a few family members.
Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal, aged 77, passed away on January 18 in India, where she had traveled to receive specialized medical care for cancer. Having served as a legislator since 1996, Ogwal's contributions to the nation were both substantial and enduring.
The atmosphere in the lobby turned poignant as a section of lawmakers and Parliament staff could not contain their emotions, shedding tears and consoling each other. The casket, opened in the lobby, allowed legislators and staff to pay their respects to the departed former MP.
As part of the final tribute proceedings, flower petals were delicately sprinkled into the room, symbolizing a farewell to a distinguished lawmaker.
The viewing and signing of the condolence book will extend until midday, after which the casket will be transferred to the House chambers for a Special sitting. During this session, Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to pay tribute to Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal, honoring her legacy and service to the nation.
Following the tribute session, the body will lie in State overnight at the House. On Tuesday morning, the late MP's body will be transported to All Saints Cathedral in Kampala for a funeral service at 9 am, marking the final farewell to a trailblazer in Ugandan politics. The nation mourns the loss of an esteemed public servant and extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Cecilia Barbra Atim Ogwal during this difficult time.
