Scores injured as YY Bus Rams into Trailer Along Mbale-Tirinyi Road

Scores of passengers narrowly escaped tragedy on Tuesday evening when a collision occurred between an Isuzu bus and a Nissan Diesel Trailer along the Mbale Tirinyi Road at Saala in Kibuku District. The incident, which transpired around 6:30 pm, resulted in injuries but fortunately, no fatalities were reported at the scene.

The vehicles involved were identified as an Isuzu bus with registration UAX 842T belonging to YY Coaches and Courier Services, driven by Mususwa Ibrahim (47 years), and a Nissan Diesel Trailer UAM 966V/UAD 120L owned by Nile Breweries Company, steered by Budigo Ismail (42 years).

According to local traffic police, both vehicles were traveling in the same direction from Mbale towards Iganga when the YY bus, allegedly speeding, collided with the trailer from behind. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver attempted to overtake the brewery trailer without realizing another vehicle was approaching from the front.

In a desperate effort to return to his lane, the YY bus driver inadvertently caused the collision, leaving the passengers of his bus injured. Although no fatalities occurred on the spot, several occupants sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Kibuku Health Center IV. Later, the more seriously injured victims, including Bsikwa Sarah (40 years) and Asha Ismail Bukenya (30 years), were transferred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further medical attention.

Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson, SP Semewo Samuel, stated, “The victims who were seriously injured, among others, were Bsikwa Sarah, Asha Ismail Bukenya, and Singh Janesaparatp. Two victims (Sarah and Asha) were referred to Mbale referral hospital for further attention.”

Concerns have been raised by the public regarding the frequency of accidents in Saala, labeling it an accident-prone black spot. The area witnessed a fatal accident in May 2023 involving another YY coach bus (UBG 400C) that claimed lives. Additionally, a December 2023 incident in Saala involved a YY coach bus (UAV 701C) colliding with a motorcycle, resulting in a fatality.

The scene of the accident has been documented by IP Angella Max, the DTO Kibuku, as investigations into the incident commence. The accidents in Saala have sparked discussions about the need for enhanced road safety measures to mitigate further occurrences in the region.
