Namasuba Residents Take Matters Into Their Own Hands, Kill Robbers

In a harrowing incident on January 18, 2024, at around 6 PM in Ndejje Kibutika Village, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, enraged residents of Namasuba confronted armed robbers, ultimately leading to a deadly outcome. The details were disclosed in a statement by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.

Katwe Police is actively investigating the incident, characterized by aggravated robbery and murder. The preliminary investigation reveals that employees of Shana Distributors Ltd, Kikuubo – Galabuzi Haruna (driver), Babirye Patricia (salesperson), and Mfitumukiza Henry (offloader) – fell victim to armed assailants during their routine product distribution.

Demanding money, the assailants turned violent when met with resistance from the Shana Distributors team. Despite firing warning shots, the attackers shot Babirye Patricia in the leg, subsequently making off with a significant sum of money, estimated at around 20 million Ugandan shillings, from the vehicle. The criminals fled on a motorcycle bearing registration UES 820K.

A pursuit ensued as the victims raised an alarm, resulting in the robbers abandoning the motorcycle. Local residents and riders in Namasuba managed to apprehend the suspects, leading to a confrontation. Tragically, two suspects, Bakka Mark and Ssemanda Brain, succumbed to injuries on the spot, while another passed away upon reaching Mulago Hospital.

Identification and voter cards were recovered from the deceased, and the alleged robbery weapon has been secured as evidence by the police. Unfortunately, the stolen cash remains unrecovered, as it is believed to have been taken by members of the public during the confrontation.

The injured victims are currently receiving urgent medical attention, and their detailed statements on the incident have been documented. The police assure the public of their commitment to providing further updates as the investigation unfolds.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire emphasized, "We urge the public to remain calm and cooperative as we work towards ensuring justice in this distressing matter." The incident highlights the complex dynamics and risks involved when communities take the law into their own hands, prompting a broader discussion on community safety and the role of law enforcement in such situations.
