UPDF Soldiers Arrested After Video of Assault on Civilian Sparks Outrage

A video depicting Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers repeatedly assaulting a man, who is seen bundled with ropes, has gone viral, sparking public outrage and condemnation. The incident reportedly occurred in Lagot village, Mucwini Subcounty, Kitgum District.

The disturbing footage, shared on social media platforms, drew attention to the actions of UPDF soldiers and civilians involved in the assault. The victim, allegedly a suspected thief, was subjected to severe flogging by individuals armed with heavy sticks. The incident raises questions about the conduct of the UPDF and the adherence to human rights standards.

In response to the video, the Ministry of Defence Spokesperson, Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, issued a statement expressing "extreme concern" about the incident. According to the statement, civilians in Lagot village had initially arrested the suspected thief and opted for mob justice instead of involving the police. The locals contacted the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum, who advised against mob justice. However, the LC 3 chairman and GISO decided to take the suspect to a local UPDF detachment.

Regrettably, the detachment commander allowed the assault to take place without the knowledge of his unit commander. The Ministry of Defence emphasizes that the soldiers involved in the incident have been arrested, and a public trial will be conducted to ensure justice is served and seen to be done.

The UPDF condemned the act of mob justice, affirming that no one has the right to administer corporal punishment or engage in any form of torture. Such actions are deemed unconstitutional under Ugandan law, which provides clear procedures for the arrest and detention of suspects.

The Ministry of Defence reassured the public of its commitment to upholding the rule of law and strict adherence to legal procedures. The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the role of security forces in protecting citizens' rights and maintaining discipline within their ranks. Public scrutiny and calls for accountability are expected to intensify as the investigation unfolds.
