President Museveni Offers Shs5m Aid to Families Affected by Busoga Royal Wedding Tragedy

The State House has provided condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic Busoga Royal Wedding accident. Following the wedding of Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope to Ms Jovia Mutesi on November 18, a driver in the Kyabazinga’s convoy lost control and collided with a crowd at Nawantumbi Trading Centre, resulting in the death of nine people and leaving 23 orphans. The deceased individuals, including a three-month-old baby, were among those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.

In response to this tragedy, the Chief Prince of Bugabula chiefdom, representing the Busoga kingdom, initially offered Shs1m to each affected family. Subsequently, State House dispatched Shs45m, with each family receiving Shs5m. The Kamuli Resident District Commissioner, Ms Rose Birungi, along with her deputy and the Kamuli LC5 chairperson, personally delivered the condolences, emphasizing that the funds were a symbolic gesture from President Museveni, who expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.

Ms Birungi assured the families that efforts were being made to facilitate support for the survivors of the accident, with Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament and First Deputy Prime Minister, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, actively involved in the process. Families were comforted by this support and expressed gratitude for the condolences extended by both the Kyabazinga and President Museveni.

One widower, Mr. Hamza Mudaagi, acknowledged the efforts of the police in apprehending the driver responsible for the accident. He expressed his hopes for justice to prevail and thanked the Kyabazinga and President Museveni for their compassionate response. Mr. Mudaagi disclosed that he utilized part of the initial Shs1m sent by the Kyabazinga to purchase materials for a structure that will serve as a memorial for his deceased wife’s food kiosk and roadside petrol business. The additional Shs5m will be used to complete the structure and stock it accordingly.
