One Dead, 57 Injured as Bus Overturns on Kampala-Masaka Highway

bus belonging to Kingo Coaches Ltd has this afternoon overturned, resulting in numerous injuries and at least one casualty. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm during a downpour, complicating road conditions.

Eyewitness Samson Joseph Ssekitto recounted the harrowing scene, describing how the bus, traveling at high speed, skidded off the road in an attempt to overtake an unidentified trailer. The wet road surface proved treacherous, and the driver struggled to maintain control, ultimately leading to the tragic accident.

"The surface was wet, and the driver failed to control the bus as he tried to overtake a trailer in a sharp corner. Many occupants sustained injuries," Ssekitto reported.

Despite immediate response efforts, one woman lost her life in the accident, with police yet to identify the deceased. Jamada Wandera, the acting southern regional police spokesperson, revealed that 15 of the 57 survivors were children, while at least 3 youngsters and 15 adults suffered serious injuries.

Wandera indicated that the bus driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, leaving authorities to launch a search for his apprehension. The preliminary investigation suggests that the accident may have been caused by the driver's excessive speed, especially given the wet road conditions.

"We are hunting for him [bus driver] to face the law," Wandera affirmed, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable for road safety.
