The Libyan authorities reported that over 2,500 people died and thousands are missing due to a massive flood that occurred in the city of Derna after a dam broke during a severe storm.
The flood swept away entire neighborhoods and their residents, causing widespread destruction. The number of missing persons is estimated to be between 5,000-6,000, according to Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army.
However, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has estimated the number of missing to be around 10,000. In response to the disaster, the three-person Presidential Council in Tripoli called upon the international community to provide assistance.
