A speeding truck rammed into Masjid Umar Mosque in Busowa town council, Bugiri district, along the Jinja-Iganga-Busia highway, causing the death of two individuals on Sunday morning.
The victims, a pregnant woman and her three-year-old son, were standing outside the mosque when the truck, identified by its number plate as KDE 144Q, struck them. The driver fled the scene to avoid community retaliation.
The incident resulted in the destruction of part of the mosque. Although a dozen pupils studying Quran teachings managed to escape unharmed, all their learning materials were destroyed.
The mosque's Imam, Mohammed Naminya, speculated that the woman might have been on her way to a neighboring church. Police investigations are ongoing, and the truck involved has been impounded to Bugiri Central Police station parking yard.
