Supporters of President Ali Bongo of Gabon gather in Owendo

Supporters of Gabon's President Ali Bongo gathered in the Owendo commune, launching his election campaign with the belief that he is the logical choice.

Bongo's family has been in power for 55 years. At 64, he succeeded his father Omar Bongo Ondimba in 2009 and officially declared his candidacy for re-election in July. The Gabonese Election Centre approved 19 out of 27 candidates, five more than in 2016.

Bongo's main rivals for the presidency are Alexandre Barro Chambrier from the opposition Rally for the Fatherland and Modernity (RPM) party, as well as Paulette Missambo, leader of the National Union.

The opposition couldn't agree on a single candidate to challenge Bongo in the August 26 election, but both contenders are former ministers and part of the Alternance 2023 coalition.
