Sudan Conflict's Fourth Month Sees Hasty Burials in Unmarked Shallow Graves

Ongoing violent clashes spanning nearly four months between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces have made holding proper funerals extremely difficult in Khartoum.

Amidst the turmoil, residents and local medical organizations report that bodies are decaying on the streets of the capital.

Accurate casualty figures for Sudan's conflict are scarce. In June, the country's health minister, Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim, estimated that over 3,000 people had been killed due to the conflict, but there have been no updates since then.

Similarly, no medical group has presented an exact count of unburied bodies, although mass graves and widespread ethnically-motivated killings have been uncovered in the southern Darfur region of the country.
