Police in Rukiga District have apprehended a male health worker identified as Darius Orikiriza, aged 38, who works as an enrolled nurse at Mparo Health Centre 4 for allegedly séxually assaulting a 20-year-old Pregnant Woman identified as Elizabeth Orishaba.
Orishaba resides in Maaya Cell, Kitanga Parish, Kashambya Sub County, within Rukiga District.
According to Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi Regional Police, the suspect resides in the quarters of the health centre located in Mparo Ward, Mparo Town Council, Rwamucucu Sub County, Rukiga District.
The incident is reported to have occurred on the 21st of August, 2023, around 1:00 PM. The victim, who is 7 months pregnant, had visited the medical facility for a routine medical checkup. Subsequently, she was directed to the scanning department, where the alleged perpetrator, Darius Orikiriza, was operating.
Upon arrival at the scanning department, Ms. Orishaba was instructed to disrobe and was then reportedly subjected to a non-consensual séxual act. Distressed by the incident, she immediately reported the matter to the facility’s management. The management promptly notified the local police to handle the situation.
Maate stated that a team of investigators, led by the District Police Commander and the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, was dispatched to the scene. They thoroughly documented the area and took the suspect into custody.
It has been disclosed that samples were collected from both the victim and the suspect by the health personnel at the same facility. These samples were collected for forensic analysis and subsequent submission to the Gender and Accountability Laboratory (GAL). Additionally, the suspect underwent testing for his HIV status.
