Former Burkina Faso Minister receives 7-year prison term for "misuse of public funds"

Vincent Dabilgou, previously the Minister of Transportation in Burkina Faso, has been sentenced to a total of eleven years in prison, with seven of those years being mandatory. He was found guilty by the Ouagadougou High Court of charges including "diverting public funds," "unlawful accumulation of wealth," and "money laundering."

Dabilgou held his ministerial role between 2018 and 2022, serving under President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, who was ousted from power in January 2022.

The court's ruling stated that Dabilgou was involved in the misappropriation of 1.7 million euros in public funds, as well as engaging in "illicit accumulation of wealth," "money laundering," and "secret funding of a political party." The political party in question is the New Time for Democracy (NTD), which Dabilgou chairs.

In addition to the prison term, he has been fined 4.7 million euros, and his party's activities have been suspended. Four others, including two former colleagues from the Ministry of Transportation, have also been given prison sentences ranging from six to eleven years, along with substantial fines.
