In preparation for the 2024 elections, seven South African opposition parties have united under the Multi-Party Convention after a two-day meeting and months of negotiations.
This collaborative effort aims to counter the ruling ANC, which is facing mounting discontent due to corruption, an energy crisis, and a struggling economy marked by high unemployment.
Notably, the coalition does not include the radical left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the country's third-largest political party. The leader of the Democratic Alliance, John Stennhuisen, expressed the coalition's goal of ousting the ANC, excluding the EFF, and establishing a multiparty government following the upcoming elections.
