Uganda Police Force (UPF) with sister security agencies are investigating circumstances under which over 15 suspects escaped from lawful custody.
We’ve learnt that the unfortunate incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Rwampara CPS in Buteraniro-Nyeihanga Town Council, located in Rwampara District.
Akankwatsa Anthony (one of the Police Officers that reported the incident) says the escape took place around 1 am Sunday morning when suspects managed to break out of the male police cells through a hole they had dug from inside.
“PC Wanaria Christine No. 51832 heard the Rwampara police dog barking unusually, when she came out of the Counter Office to see what was happening, she realized that the male police cell was broken and suspects had escaped through the hole they dug from inside the cell,” Akankwakwatsa narrated.
Some suspects that escaped custody are those involved in various crimes, including defilement, theft, violence, drug possession, arson, and robbery. These are Twimatsiko Ignatius, Aronda Salim, Ariho Erick, Muhumuza Barcklays, Tumwekwatse Yakobu, Nyesiga Jackson, Tujunirwe Medard, Baguma Rogers, Akampa Benson, Turinawe Laubel, Atukunda Lawrence, Mwijukye Joram, Tusiime Akara, Muhanguzi Ronald, and Kamugisha Denis.
The authorities, including the District Police Commander, Scene of Crime officers, and Criminal Investigation Division team, visited the scene and initiated a search operation to re-arrest the suspects. Disciplinary action has been taken against the officers on duty for neglecting their duties, and an inquiry is underway.
